Get Carter OST - Roy Budd [1971]
We ends the month as we begins, with vintage unglamorous UK crime, and exchanging The Sweeney's scummy London for turn of 70s Newcastle. Blighted, reeking neglect, industrial detritus, rotting slums, slag heaps, hard men and brutalised women. The Swingin' 60s are not so much buried as erased from history. Cometh the hour, cometh Michael Caine at the top of his game as randy, revengeful anti-hero Jack Carter.
In game topping form too is Roy Budd. The music clinically frames both degraded environment and Caine's muted cool and sporadic extreme violence. Seedy drinking den r'n'b intermixed with main theme variations: spine-tingling harpsichord shards drenched in gloomy reverb and echo. Opening bass-driven funk riff over tablas percussion is bleakly sublime.
Essential.

Shut It! The Music of the Sweeney - Various [2001]
Thames TV go a cockney blaxploitation bundle.....the slags.
I sometimes hate this bastard place. 'Sa bloody holiday camp for thieves n weirdos. All the rubbish. You age prematurely trying 't sort somma them out. Try n protect the public n all they do is call you fascist. You nail a villain and some ponced up pin-striped 'Ampstead barrister screws it up like n old fag packet on a point of procedure. Then pops up for a game of squash n a glass of Madeira. He's taking 'ome thirty grand a year and we can just about afford ten days in Eastbourne n a second hand car. Aargh...it's all bloody wrong my son!

Mwandishi - Herbie Hancock [1974]

Electro gadgeteer Herbie manipulates reverb unit, stereo tremelo and echoplex, taking us in directions spacey. Our man's 5 year tenure as keyboard factotum and accomplice in Miles Davis' post-bop electric experimentation very much to the fore. A worthy extension of "Silent Way" philosophy and pinnacle in early 70s afro-rock-electro-jazz-funk fusion.
Heavy on groove and low on wankery withal. Nice.

A Tribute to Jack Johnson - Miles Davis [1970]
If not quite fulfilling his boast about delivering "the greatest rock band you ever heard," Miles certainly got to exorcise his Hendrix hard on with driving, hard-edged panache. Same modus operandi as established on ground breaking In A Silent Way i.e. assemble top notch muso-acolytes - Messrs McLaughlin, Hancock, Corea, Cobham, Henderson and Grossman - conduct / freak them into extemporised mathematical riffing, jam all over it like a brassy-eyed jammy daemon, and then cut, paste n reassemble as studio composition with uber-mucker Teo Macero.
Two mega cuts.First track the ice-cool killer. McLaughlin shaking some serious funk rock booty n showing exactly what he's capable of outside prissy pyrotechnic Mahavishnu confines. Hancock's brutal organ from around 16:00mins: world shifts on its axis...

Can You Dig It? The Music and Politics of Black Action Films 1969-75
Not sure where the politics come in...maybe inside 100 page booklet supplied by impeccable compilers down Soul Jazz way. Do expect pimps, prostitutes, petty hoods, pushermen n social conscience do gooders exhorting brothas n sistas to unite...oh n lest we forget, African American vampires. Post-civil rights n pre-mainstream soon to come with the..ahem...watered down likes of Car Wash n high octane doing it for da black n white folks Richard Pryor (man on fire, boom boom). Head Hunters - Herbie Hancock [1973]
In which Herbie tracks down and slays his funk, soul, R&B mojo. Deeply funky grooves, gritty rhythms in abject abeyance to Mr H.'s Fender Rhodes piano, clavinet, synthesizer soloing.
Continuing y brawd's presentation of jazz for people who dinnae like jazz.

Rejuvenation - The Meters [1974]
On the one, earthy down-home New Orleans syncopated breaks intertwined with gritty guitar and bass grooves. Funked up avec un soupçon de soul. Quite simply one of the best funk albums you are likely to hear. What'cha say?

New Orleans Funk Volumes 1 & 2 - Various
Grooving soul, funk, r'n'b gumbo. Pumping horns, swing skanking guitar and above all some incredible breaks and beats: check James Black's patented falling down the stairs but keeping shit together breaks on Hook and Sling. Mind-blowingly good music. Do yourself a favour.

Black Byrd - Donald Byrd [1972]
Prepare to enter funk and soul jazz heaven. Stratospheric mellow grooves. And without over-pimping the mothership, all necessary blaxploitation tropes deployed: thwak-a-waka guitar, flutes, hand-held percussion, big meaty bass and driving rhythm. Over and above all the inspired trumpet of Mr. Byrd.
If the collocation of the words "jazz" and "fusion" sends a cold chill down your spine, then start here. It may well be the beginning of a beautiful journey.

Live, Meadowbrook, Michigan, 12th September 1971 - Funkadelic
"Yeah, take care of your body.
The funk will funkatelicise everyone within the range of this music.
Don't hold yourself rigid, unless the occasion calls for it.
Let your minds be lather-like.
George Clinton chief coke-head is going to sprinkle funk from one end of this pavillion to the other...." and - wham! - straight into Alice in my fantasies.
Heavy funk jam wig outs. The mighty Maggot Brain (second track! WTF?).
Has to be contender for place in top 5 live albums of 70s.
Free your mind and your ass will follow, yes indeed.

The Chambers Brothers' Greatest Hits - The Chambers Brothers
Psychedelicised soul. The mighty Time Has Come Today, and, to these ears at least, their gospel roots making for the definitive version of People Get Ready. The Bros pioneering blend of incendiary funk, gospel, soul, and psych-rock was inevitably overshadowed by Sly & the Family Stone. Get ready, the time has come.
